HOW YOU CAN START: SETTING UP A NON-PROFIT

You can start by setting up a non-profit. After that, it’s simple to get non-profit status from the IRS – if you know the secrets. If you don’t, you’ll either pay a huge amount for legal help or risk getting lost in endless delays. That’s my belief about the IRS non-profit filing and approval process after seeing many founders get bogged down setting up a non-profit.

I’m going to take you by the hand and walk you step-by-step through the easiest way I know for setting up a non-profit and getting non-profit status, FAST.

Once setting up a non-profit is accomplished, funding it and getting it running smoothly comes next. Then you’ll be on your way to changing the world…without going hungry… and you’ll “attract” others who believe in your cause and help you…

NON-PROFIT 101 – “KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON”

Between running and consulting for several non-profits, and helping people setting up a non-profit, I earn enough to care for my family and support causes I believe in – including foster care, church organizations, and World Vision – because I’ve discovered key things about how the non-profit world works.

So I routinely get calls about setting up a non-profit and other essentials. But I have to say “no” a lot less now because I’m developing specific non-profit training to help leaders like you.

If you’re just starting out, it may seem impossible to run, independently consult for and financially contribute to great non-profits while “keeping the lights on.”

My eBook, 7 Deadly Mistakes of Filing Your IRS Non-Profit Application, shares what I learned early in my career: “You can’t save the world if you can’t pay the rent.”

The secret lies in having a goal – you in charge of a healthy, sustainable non-profit – and taking things a step at a time.

Just as much as knowing about setting up a non-profit or what the IRS agent is looking for in a non-profit application or how fundraisers find prospects, it’s essential to understand your non-profit’s growth cycle.

FIVE-STEP SUCCESS FORMULA

Setting up a non-profit to be successful is simple, if you follow what I show you. Take care of basics and then build from there. Here’s my formula:

STEP 1- Frame it
Naming your group and creating a legal entity are the first basics of setting up a non-profit.

STEP 2 – File it
Get non-profit status from the IRS.

STEP 3 – Form it
Build your board, get your marketing together, and formulate a 1-to-5-year plan.

STEP 4 – Fund it
Raise the money you need to be effective. Skimping on non-profit fundraising turns rewarding work into toil. There’s money out there, if you know how to find the right people and then make it happen.

STEP 5 – Foster it
A great organization is prepared not only to achieve its mission and adapt with the times, but also to grow and even outlive its founder.

GetNonProfitStatus.com is focused on Steps 1 and 2, setting up a non-profit. But after you get non-profit status, I’ll coach you through Steps 3 to 5 for success! Now, back to setting up a non-profit…

THREE BASICS FOR SETTING UP A NON-PROFIT

You could literally be up and running and raising money in 1 to 5 days with this quick way to setting up a non-profit.

I’m going to assume you have a name for your organization. If you don’t, you can still move forward and later change it or add a “D.B.A.” Do NOT let this stop you.

There are three basics to setting up a non-profit:

1. File your “entity” – your corporate structure – using our portal page that covers all 50 states. Get online, find your secretary of state or the agency responsible for filing, and create a non-profit corporation.

2. Obtain your non-profit EIN from the IRS:  Also known as your tax ID number, this gives your company its “social security number” –  required for all subsequent filings and financial transactions.

3. Go to your bank and open a non-profit account – you’re in business!

Setting up a non-profit can be accomplished in an afternoon. If your schedule is tight and you haven’t looked at potential names yet, a few one-hour blocks should be ample. Be generous and give yourself a week.

File Your Corporate Structure

Filing your corporate structure is as simple as choosing a name, clicking a few times online, and paying $50 or so, depending on your state. It’s generally not worth paying a “filing service,” because setting up a non-profit with a corporate structure is a fairly simple online process.

Obtain your non-profit EIN

Obtaining your non-profit EIN or Tax ID number used to be simpler, but the IRS added a couple of questions and categories. But watch this video and you’ll see right on screen how to do it.

Check back frequently for New Training – but you can see that setting up a non-profit is not that difficult!
